ABSTRACT

There are three main components manufactured from whole blood: red blood cells (RBCs), plasma, and platelets. Plasma contains a multitude of different proteins, peptides, and biologic substances. Approximately 53 million liters of plasma was collected in the United States in 2019. Following collection, plasma is frozen and manufactured into plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs). During the manufacture process, several thousand plasma units are pooled for Cohn fractionation, which is based upon cold ethanol precipitation of proteins. The PDMPs are further prepared using ion exchange or affinity chromatography and additional steps to inactivate and remove infectious diseases such as viruses. Almost 20 different therapeutic plasma proteins are purified from plasma via these multi-step manufacturing processes. Interestingly, the demand for pharmaceutical plasma products, particularly intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) products, has been increasing. The manufacture and therapeutic role of blood derivatives particularly immunoglobulin therapy, Rh immunoglobulin (RhIG), COVID-19 convalescent plasma (CCP) and hyperimmune globulins, albumin, clotting factors, fibrin sealants, and platelet rich plasma will be described.Copyright © 2022 AME Publishing Company. ABSTRACT

Bangladesh imports roughly 98% of cotton from abroad to produce fabric or yarn (USDA 2020. Cotton and Products Update. Bangladesh. Also available at https://apps.fas.usda.gov/newgainapi/api/Report/DownloadReportByFileName?fileName=Cotton%20and%20Products%20Update_Dhaka_Bangladesh_11-30-2020). The production of textiles in Bangladesh depends on the price of raw material, the demand for garment products in the importing countries, smooth supply chain management, and the domestic supply of cheap garment laborers. The global pandemic of COVID-19 disrupted the supply chain of almost all physical goods and services, including textiles. It caused the price of textiles to fall due to a drop in worldwide demand, and increased the marginal cost of textile production due to supply chain interruptions. This paper shows how the decline in the demand for garments, coupled with an increase in cost, shrinks the producer welfare of textile manufacturing and garment exports of the small producing country, Bangladesh.

ABSTRACT

The continuous increase in COVID-19 positive cases in the Philippines might further weaken the local healthcare system. As such, an efficient system must be implemented to further improve the immunization efforts of the country. In this paper, a contactless digital electronic device is proposed to assess the vaccine and booster brand compatibility. Using Logisim 2.7.1, the logic diagrams were designed and simulated with the help of truth tables and Boolean functions. Moreover, the finalized logic circuit design was converted into its equivalent complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and stick diagrams to help contextualize how the integrated circuits will be designed. Results have shown that the proposed device was able to accept three inputs of the top three COVID-19 vaccine brands (Sinovac, AstraZeneca, and Pfizer) and assess the compatibility of heterologous vaccinations. With the successful results of the circuit, it can be concluded that this low-power device can be used to manufacture a physical prototype for use in booster vaccination sites. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

During the COVID-19 pandemic the healthcare facilities all over world collapsed due to shortage of essential biomedical devices. ECG devices are one of those crucial instruments required for tracing electrical activities of heart. Due to the high cost of gold standard ECG devices used in the medical industries, the availability of on-demand ECG devices was not accessible to everyone. Thus, the need of portable, low cost, on-demand ECG device was needful at the earliest. In this paper we propose a novel, versatile, 3-lead, IoT enabled, LM324/LM741 operational amplifiers in instrumentation amplifier configuration Electrocardiogram machine that is aimed towards providing accurate information about the electrical activity of our heart in real time. In this attempt, we have come up with an analogue circuit design consisting of multiple operational amplifier IC based fundamental circuit blocks. The prototype is designed in such a way that the output of ECG can be visualised worldwide using IoT. © 2023 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

In this study, it was aimed to comparatively investigate the grain properties of shoe upper leathers produced for different purposes. Thus, six different types of shoe upper leather (cracked, antique, patent, nappa, nubuck, printed) were provided from three different footwear companies. The tensile strength and elongation at break (TS EN ISO 3376), single and double edge tear strength (TS EN ISO 3377-1, TS EN ISO 3377-2), cracking and bursting resistance (TS 4137 EN ISO 3378, TS EN ISO 3379), flex resistance (TS EN ISO 5402-1) as well as dry and wet rubbing fastness tests (TS EN ISO 11640) were applied to leathers that have similar thicknesses. The results of the study gave information about the physical strength and product performances of different upper leather types. The data were evaluated comparatively and the effects of shoe upper leather types on quality and performance were evaluated. © 2022 Toate drepturile asupra acestei ediţii sunt rezervate editorilor.

ABSTRACT

Currently a new type of coronavirus is raging around the world, and many countries have relaxed the control of the epidemic. Wearing a mask has become the best self-protection measure for people to travel. Intercalated melt-blown nonwoven materials are in short supply as filter layers for daily-worn masks. This paper studies the relationship between the process parameters and structural variables of intercalated melt-blown nonwoven materials, and creatively uses machine learning-related algorithms to solve its nonlinear relationship. The optimized back propagation neural network model is the most suitable in this field, and the goodness of fit can reach more than 99.99%. Based on various limitations of actual industrial production, this model is used to traverse the process parameters, and the intercalated melt-blown nonwoven material is obtained. The best process parameters, in which the receiving distance is 27 cm, and the hot air velocity is 890 r/min, in this case, the thickness and porosity of the material produced are very low, while the compression resilience is very high, considering the filtration efficiency of the mask and comfort. © The Author(s) 2023.

ABSTRACT

Background: Pharmaceutical businesses had enormous difficulties in product distribution during COVID-19, and the solution to this perpetual issue is a resilient supply chain. Aim(s): The study aims to understand the vulnerabilities to which it subjected the pharmaceutical product distribution supply chains during the COVID-19 pandemic and further develop an adaptive model through which the pharmaceutical product supply chain can enhance its resilience capabilities. Material(s) and Method(s): The conceptual model is developed for the supply chain of pharmaceutical companies based on the literature survey, and then the conceptual model is explored through factor analysis. Researchers have developed a validated model after a statistical analysis using Cronbach's alpha. Subjective analysis has concluded that the pharmaceutical supply chain's resilience is driven by factors such as "trade cost," which comprises transport cost, business practices, and raw material sourcing cost;"shock propagation," which comprises country-specific shocks, production shocks, and policy changes;and "technological infrastructure bottleneck," which relates to the availability of cold chain storage warehouses and refrigerated transport vehicle facilities. Result(s): An empirical model pertaining to supply chain resilience may be further studied with different geographies, like Pune, Hyderabad, and Delhi NCR, for the purpose of generalizing the study. Conclusion(s): The identified major factors were trade cost, shock propagation, and technological infrastructure bottlenecks. The sensitivity of the issue under investigation required a personal touch to the survey, as the COVID-19 pandemic had left these respondents emotionally vulnerable. As COVID-19 is the recent catastrophe that has hit humanity, it has made the pharmaceutical product distribution channel vulnerable during the pandemic. ABSTRACT

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) was first detected in Wuhan, China, in the month of December 2019. Further, in March 2020, the COVID-19 epidemic was described by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a global pandemic. COVID-19 quickly spread around the world in the following months, affecting about 2.5 million individuals by April 2020. World markets, including the pharmaceutical industry, were devastated by this pandemic. Although no specific solution for this emerging infectious disease is currently available, the pharmaceutical industry is helping policymakers meet unmet COVID-19 desires, ranging from research and advancement initiatives on possible prevention methods to the management of the supply chain of drugs in times of crisis. Changes in demand, commodity shortages, contact adjustments, etc., are hindering developments in the mechanism of technology, research and development and are putting an impact on the health market of COVID-19. Other implications of COVID-19 on the physical condition and pharmaceutical market may include acceptance delays, heading to self-sufficiency in the delivery chain, etc. In addition, the pharmaceutical markets are battling to sustain natural consumer flows, as the latest pandemic has had an effect on access to essential drugs at reasonable rates, which is the key priori-ty of all pharmaceutical systems.Copyright © 2022 Bentham Science Publishers.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 epidemic has largely restricted the traditional offline medical treatment model. In this study, we designed ECG monitoring smart clothing based on the Holter system after identifying and analyzing the needs of patients and doctors. This clothing is a wearable device that integrates monitoring and remote diagnosis, building a general network platform to realize remote data transfer sharing and online interactive auxiliary diagnosis. Wearable clothing that can monitor ECG in real time is designed and developed by intelligently integrating limb lead wires, conductive fiber fabrics, lead interfaces, and electrode signal storage receivers by using the human body sensing conduction principle of real-time ECG monitoring. Wearable real-time ECG monitoring clothing can help patients achieve fast virtual medical care and auxiliary diagnosis, and solve the design issues with electrode signal storage receivers. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The European fabric fairs for the autumn/winter 2023/24 season were held in a hesitant spirit, reflecting economic uncertainties affecting the whole of the textile and clothing industry. The industry has faced persistent disruptions to supply chains caused by lockdowns, which have continued to be imposed in major textile and clothing producing countries in an attempt to stem the spread of COVID-19. Furthermore, the war in Ukraine has introduced additional challenges—including difficulties in procuring raw materials and sharp increases in fuel and energy costs. At the same time, calls for the European textile and clothing industry to take action to reduce the damaging impact of its operations on the environment have intensified. It was evident at the fairs that many exhibitors had acknowledged these calls in the development of their product ranges for the autumn/winter 2023/24 season. Many had turned to eliminating dyes which contain harmful synthetic chemicals from their ranges and some had collaborated with leading innovators in the development of dyes which contain natural pigments, plant-based materials and, in some cases, fermented foodstuffs. For several exhibitors, it was important to replace finishing treatments which contain toxic chemicals with finishing treatments containing natural substances while for others the key considerations were traceability and transparency in the design and development of their ranges. The key colours for the autumn/winter 2023/24 season are rich and earthy, although there are some exceptions to this trend. Notably, grey is prominent—and silver is the principal metallic colour of the season. Print and pattern are prominent in collections for the season and, importantly, eccentric and fantastical graphic designs dominate. Designs which feature and surrealist imagery are prevalent while designs which are influenced by folklore and classical antiquity are popular. Also popular are designs which feature photographic imagery of landscapes and urban scenery, and designs which feature hand drawn illustrations, references to pop art, and collage. © Textiles Intelligence Limited 2022.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has been one of the most unprecedented crises of recent decades with a global effect on society and the economy. It has triggered changes in the behavior and consumption patterns of both final consumer and industrial consumers. The consumption patterns of industrial consumers are also influenced by changes in consumer values, environmental regulations, and technological developments. One of the technological highlights of the last decade is biocomposite materials being increasingly used by the packaging industry. The pandemic has highlighted the problems and challenges of the development of biocomposites to adapt to new market conditions. This study aims to investigate the industrial consumption of biocomposite materials and the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on the main stages of the value chain of sustainable industrial consumption of biocomposites. The research results reveal there is a growing interest in the use of biocomposites. Suppliers and processors of raw materials are being encouraged to optimize and adapt cleaner production processes in the sustainable transition pathway. The study highlights the positive impact of COVID-19 on the feedstock production, raw material processing, and packaging manufacturing stages of the value chain as well as the neutral impact on the product manufacturing stage and negative impact on the retail stage. The companies willing to move toward the sustainable industrial chain have to incorporate economic, environmental, social, stakeholder, volunteer, resilience, and long-term directions within their strategies.

ABSTRACT

Objective: Harmonic Focus (Ethicon, Johnson and Johnson, Cincinnati, OH, USA), LigaSure Small Jaw (Medtronic, Covidien Products, Minneapolis, MN, USA), and Thunderbeat Open Fine Jaw (Olympus, Japan) are electrosurgical instruments used widely in head and neck surgery. The study aims to compare device malfunctions, adverse events to patients, operative injuries, and interventions related to Harmonic, LigaSure, and Thunderbeat use during thyroidectomy. Methods: The US Food and Drug Administration's Manufacture and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database was queried for adverse events associated with Harmonic, LigaSure, and Thunderbeat from January 2005 to August 2020. Data were extracted from reports pertaining to thyroidectomy. Results: Of the 620 adverse events extracted, 394 (63.5%) involved Harmonic, 134 (21.6%) LigaSure, and 92 (14.8%) Thunderbeat. The reported device malfunctions most frequently associated with Harmonic was damage to the blade (110 (27.9%)), LigaSure was inappropriate function (47 (43.1%)), Thunderbeat was damage to the tissue or Teflon pad (27 (30.7%)), respectively. Burn injury and incomplete hemostasis were the most commonly reported adverse events. The operative injury reported most frequently when using Harmonic and LigaSure was burn injury. No operator injuries were reported with Thunderbeat use. Conclusion: The most frequently reported device malfunctions were damage to the blade, inappropriate function, and damage to the tissue or Teflon pad. The most frequently reported adverse events to patients was a burn injury and incomplete hemostasis. Interventions aimed at improving physician education may help reduce adverse events attributed to improper use.

ABSTRACT

This Review initiates a wide-ranging discussion over 2023 by selecting and exploring core themes to be investigated more deeply in papers submitted to the Vaccines Special Issue on the "Future of Epidemic and Pandemic Vaccines to Serve Global Public Health Needs". To tackle the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, an acceleration of vaccine development across different technology platforms resulted in the emergency use authorization of multiple vaccines in less than a year. Despite this record speed, many limitations surfaced including unequal access to products and technologies, regulatory hurdles, restrictions on the flow of intellectual property needed to develop and manufacture vaccines, clinical trials challenges, development of vaccines that did not curtail or prevent transmission, unsustainable strategies for dealing with variants, and the distorted allocation of funding to favour dominant companies in affluent countries. Key to future epidemic and pandemic responses will be sustainable, global-public-health-driven vaccine development and manufacturing based on equitable access to platform technologies, decentralised and localised innovation, and multiple developers and manufacturers, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). There is talk of flexible, modular pandemic preparedness, of technology access pools based on non-exclusive global licensing agreements in exchange for fair compensation, of WHO-supported vaccine technology transfer hubs and spokes, and of the creation of vaccine prototypes ready for phase I/II trials, etc. However, all these concepts face extraordinary challenges shaped by current commercial incentives, the unwillingness of pharmaceutical companies and governments to share intellectual property and know-how, the precariousness of building capacity based solely on COVID-19 vaccines, the focus on large-scale manufacturing capacity rather than small-scale rapid-response innovation to stop outbreaks when and where they occur, and the inability of many resource-limited countries to afford next-generation vaccines for their national vaccine programmes. Once the current high subsidies are gone and interest has waned, sustaining vaccine innovation and manufacturing capability in interpandemic periods will require equitable access to vaccine innovation and manufacturing capabilities in all regions of the world based on many vaccines, not just "pandemic vaccines". Public and philanthropic investments will need to leverage enforceable commitments to share vaccines and critical technology so that countries everywhere can establish and scale up vaccine development and manufacturing capability. This will only happen if we question all prior assumptions and learn the lessons offered by the current pandemic. We invite submissions to the special issue, which we hope will help guide the world towards a global vaccine research, development, and manufacturing ecosystem that better balances and integrates scientific, clinical trial, regulatory, and commercial interests and puts global public health needs first.

ABSTRACT

Purpose: The aim of this paper is to explore the changes in the ICT and global value chains (GVCs) after the COVID-19 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach: This study compared the difference between Korea' domestic ICT industries, ICT imports and ICT exports before and after the COVID-19 outbreak by using trade data of ICT products and national economic indicators, and presents growth strategy for the ICT industry in the post-COVID 19 era. For this purpose, this study determined the causalities between Korea's imports/exports of ICT products and composite Indexes before and after COVID-19, and derived implications in the ICT industry environment after the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings: Analysis results showed the following changes in Korea's ICT industry in the post-COVID-19 world. (1) Non-face-to-face and contact-free technologies related sectors in the ICT industry, such as the semiconductor sector, have grown exponentially;(2) as the USA has grown as the new key player, the causal relationship with China, a key player of the GVC in the pre-COVID-19 era, disappeared;and (3) the GVC of the ICT industry is not a rigid one-way vertical structure, but is changing to a flexible structure influenced by cooperation and competition between countries. Originality/value: The results indicate that it is essential to constantly develop new ICT sectors that make use of non-face-to-face and contact-free technologies in the post-COVID-19 era, and the main strategies in response to the changed GVC would be taking the initiative by securing source technologies and expanding through cooperation with other GVCs and resource sharing. © 2022, Emerald Publishing Limited.
